First Home Buyers can currently access the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) scheme which was introduced on 1 July 2000. Additionally, there may be additional support that can be accessed for a first home purchase depending upon which state you will live in. Please note; sometimes the First Home Owners Grant is colloquially known as the First Home Buyers Grant. These are one and the same.
The First Home Owners Grant was initially introduced to offset the effect of GST on home ownership. It is a national scheme funded by the states and territories and administered under each states own legislation. Since the scheme was initially introduced, the conditions and benefits have changed and also vary state to state.
In general, under the scheme, a one-off grant is payable to first home owners that satisfy all the eligibility criteria. Furthermore, some states offer additional benefits to first home buyers such as stamp duty exemptions or the HomeBuilders program.
